Jamaica Sheep and Goat Meat Production: Trends, Challenges

Jamaica’s sheep and goat meat production sector plays a role in the country’s livestock economy, supplying locally produced animal protein while supporting farmers, processors, traders, and rural communities. Recent data indicate that production remains relatively modest but continues to attract attention as agricultural stakeholders seek to strengthen domestic livestock value chains. According to FAOSTAT-based data, Jamaica produced approximately 432 tonnes of sheep and goat meat in 2024, representing an 11.5% decline from the previous year and a 43.9% decrease over the past decade. These figures highlight the importance of examining production capacity, livestock availability, farm productivity, and market conditions affecting the sector.

Production Trends in Jamaica

The long-term production series shows substantial variation in Jamaica’s sheep and goat meat output. FAOSTAT-based data indicate that the historical production peak was approximately 2.5 thousand tonnes in 1962, while the 2024 level of 432 tonnes is considerably lower. At the same time, Jamaica’s overall sheep and goat population has increased in recent years. FAOSTAT data show approximately 604,100 sheep and goats in 2024, the highest level in the available historical series and about 15.9% above the 2014 level. The difference between livestock numbers and meat output points to the importance of productivity, slaughter rates, animal weight, farm management, and market access rather than herd size alone.

Goat Meat Remains a Key Component

Government livestock statistics provide additional insight into the domestic slaughtering system. In 2024, Jamaica recorded 25,593 goats slaughtered, producing 426,974 kilograms of total weight, including 355,812 kilograms of dress weight and 71,162 kilograms of edible offal. Sheep slaughtering was substantially smaller, with 140 animals recorded and 4,510 kilograms of total weight. This indicates that goats account for the overwhelming majority of the sheep and goat slaughtering activity captured in Jamaica’s official livestock statistics.

Earlier data also illustrate the contraction in goat production. In 2022, 33,416 goats were slaughtered, generating 585,519 kilograms of total weight and 487,932 kilograms of dress weight. By 2023, the number slaughtered had declined to 27,452, while total weight fell to 482,272 kilograms and dress weight to 401,894 kilograms.

Factors Influencing Production

Several factors can influence Jamaica’s sheep and goat meat supply, including feed availability, animal health, breeding practices, farm scale, weather conditions, production costs, and access to veterinary and extension services. Smallholder farming remains important to livestock production, making productivity improvements particularly significant. Better breeding programs, improved nutrition, disease management, and stronger farm-level record keeping can help producers improve animal performance and meat yields.

Market organization is another important consideration. Efficient collection, slaughtering, processing, cold-chain infrastructure, and distribution can help reduce losses and improve the commercial value of locally produced meat. Greater coordination between producers, processors, retailers, and institutional buyers could also support more predictable demand.

Future Outlook

The outlook for Jamaica’s sheep and goat meat sector will depend on how effectively the industry converts its livestock base into consistent commercial meat production. The rise in the national sheep and goat population alongside declining meat production suggests that productivity and market-chain factors deserve particular attention. Investments in animal genetics, nutrition, veterinary services, processing infrastructure, and farmer training could contribute to greater efficiency.

Reliable production statistics will remain important for planning. Jamaica’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining publishes annual livestock production estimates covering slaughter numbers, total weight, dress weight, and edible offal. Continued monitoring of these indicators can help policymakers and industry participants identify changes in domestic supply and assess opportunities for strengthening the sheep and goat meat value chain.
