Preventive maintenance is particularly useful for production programs where the same tool is expected to operate over an extended period.

Storage between production runs should not be ignored either. If tooling remains unused for a period, exposed metal surfaces can be affected by moisture and corrosion. Cleaning residual plastic, applying suitable rust protection, checking cooling passages, and storing the tool in an appropriate environment can help protect its condition. Keeping production and maintenance records can also help buyers understand when inspection or replacement of wear components may be appropriate.
